Serious pencil skills...

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

I first came across Nicole Jarecz about four months ago, and was blown away by her beautiful illustrations. Since then Ive regularly checked her blog to see what pieces she showcases next. Her work is mainly with pencil and due to the fact she constantly inspires me I asked her if she would be willing to answer some questions about her work to feature on Magpie Girl.

When did you realise Illustration is what you wanted to do for a career?

I realized that Illustration was what I wanted to do as a career when I was a senior in high school. I had always been involved in the art programs throughout high school but only became more serious about it during my senior year. I checked out a few colleges and my teacher recommended that I look into illustration. I was blown away by the work people were producing in the illustration department at my former college. Ever since then, I was sold on illustration as a career.

What mediums do you use to create your illustrations? Pencil? Photoshop, watercolour?
I typically stick to graphite in my illustrations. But, I like to experiment with other mediums as well such as watercolor and pen&ink.

Are there certain places and people that inspire you?

I'm very inspired by traveling. Going to different places and seeing new and exciting things is always inspiring. I've been lucky enough that I've been able to travel a lot since I started college when I was 18. I think that experiencing European life at such a young age has made a difference in my artwork. My favorite place so far is Paris though. I'm actually moving there in July. There is always something new and exciting to see in that city. I'm a big people-watcher as well which also makes Paris a great place.
I'm also inspired by a few close friends of mine who are also artists. Being surrounded by creative people makes your drive even harder!

You work freelance, so companies hire you to create one off pieces, who would you love to work with? (maybe a magazine, maybe an author or maybe for a gallery or celebrity?)
I would LOVE to work with Nylon magazine. I love Nylon because they use a lot of illustrators for their spreads. It's one of the few fashion magazines today that still does this. I would like to see more diversity in fashion magazines besides photography. I love photography but I think adding illustrations to a magazine gives it a whole other dimension.

Why did you decide to create a blog to showcase your work? and which bloggers inspire you most?
I created a blog to showcase my work at first just so family and friends could see what I was up to. After a while though I realized that blogging is very important if you want to get your artwork out there to a large amount of people. I found that it was a good fit with my artwork since I am doing fashion illustration and since I do follow a lot of fashion bloggers out there. (who i thought may be interested in my work) I just hope that when people look at my work, they are getting something out of it. I hope it puts a smile on their faces - because that's what my work is all about - its about fun and enjoyment.
My favorite bloggers out there are Denni from chicmuse, Andy from stylescrapbook, and Gemma from fadetoblack. They are all really sweet girls and they've even let me illustrate them a few times!

Where would you like to be in 5 years time?

Sipping on Sangria in Barcelona... No, but I would hope that within 5 years my freelance career will start to be paying off - slowly but surely. I just feel really lucky to be pursuing illustration as a career. I have a lot of fun doing what I do. I just hope to be happy with this and be with the people I love the most.

  9. Those pictures are so beautiful. Here in Japan, most fashion magazines still have a lot of illustration, regardless of the clothing style. It really livens up the pages and sets off the photography. Of course, almost everything has an illustrated form in Japan, it's a shame it's so rare in other countries...
